Al Unser Jr.

We had the chance to catch up with the speedster Al Unser Jr. at this year’s Greater Milwaukee Auto and Truck show held in May.

This conversation was candid and he was willing to discuss several topics. A lot centered on his father who encouraged him to stay with racing. He even talks about how dad talked him out of staying with NASCAR. He continued sharing about his current passion of mentoring young racing stars.

Alan Kulwicki Cruisin’ Car Show with Gary Manke

Gary is a member of the Greater Greenfield Lions Club which hosts this very popular show.

It’s held at the commemorative park named after one of NASCAR’s toughest racers. Alan was a native of Greenfield, Wisconsin and went on the become a folk hero to many racing fans. He arrived at NASCAR with no sponsor and ended up with the 1986 NASCAR Rookie of the Year award. He is also remembered for his trademark “Polish Victory Lap” when he won the 1992 Winston Cup Championship. Tragically, Alan died early in 1993 in a small plane. The park was built to honor his Greenfield roots and is filled with his memorabilia including trophies, photographs, huge payment boards and more.

The car show is a fundraiser for many of the Lions charitable deeds, like support cool camps for handicapped children, providing assistance to community members with site and hearing problems, providing scholarships to area high school seniors.
